It’s the beginning of January, so all of the fitness ads and commercials are being thrown at you! While having a fitness resolution can be a really great thing, don’t get caught up in all the hype. Fitness doesn’t have to be difficult or something that you dread doing on a daily basis. In fact, I find that this is often the reason why people don’t stick with working out – they don’t enjoy it! The good news is that there are all kinds of ways to workout and, odds are, you’ll be able to find one that you really enjoy doing!
1. Not All Fitness is the Same
Some workouts are short, some are long; some are full body, some target certain body parts; some involve a group, some are individual. Think about the time you have to spend and what you want to accomplish in that time – this can really help narrow down your options!
2. Enjoyment is Key
Like I said in the intro, many people don’t keep up with their resolutions because they pick a workout plan that they don’t enjoy. For instance – I don’t like running at all! If that were my only fitness option, I would struggle. But I really enjoy lifting weights, so that’s my go-to workout! I do run occasionally because I know it’s good for me, but I don’t do it all the time. I gravitate towards the workouts that I enjoy!
3. Consider Your Goals
If your goal is to get stronger, yoga is probably not the fitness you want to invest in. If you want to improve flexibility, running probably shouldn’t be your go-to. Sit down and think about what you want to accomplish, outside of just losing weight. Give yourself some concrete goals about what you want your body to accomplish and then pick a style of workout that will help you get there!
It can be overwhelming to try to find what works for you. Don’t rush yourself and don’t stress. There are so many free videos available online, try some different kinds of workouts and see if you like one more than the others! Once you’ve picked a route you want to take, you can invest in some equipment and/or classes to push your limits!
