Resistance training can be kind of a scary term. You may hear it and think that dumbbells and squat racks are involved. And while they can be, they don’t have to be. Resistance training involves ANY kind of resistance against the norm. Resistance training can include resistance bands, minibands, dumbbells, kettlebells, BOSU balls, stability balls, and even your own bodyweight! You certainly don’t have to be afraid of resistance training and it’s almost guaranteed that you’re going to find a modality that you connect with and really enjoy. While there are many benefits to resistance training, I’m going to talk about 5 of my favorites that are particularly great for moms!
1. Stronger Muscles
One of the most obvious changes you will notice when beginning resistance training is stronger muscles! While we all probably don’t want to look like the Hulk, most women like to have some tone to their bodies and resistance training is a great way to achieve that.
2. Enhanced Flexibility and Balance
Through pregnancy and postpartum, a lot changes with your flexibility and balance. Center of gravity changes during pregnancy and then after delivery, you feel like you’re living in a new body that you have to re-learn to use properly. Resistance training can help re-establish that mind-body connection and enhance your flexibility and balance.
3. Improved Stamina
Have you found yourself running out of breath chasing your toddler around or climbing up a flight of stairs? You don’t have to do hours and hours of cardio to improve your stamina. Resistance training is a great way to train your heart to pump more efficiently and will give you more stamina to keep up with all the things throughout the day!
4. Increased Bone Density
As women, many of us will struggle with osteoporosis later in life. Studies have shown that resistance training actually increases bone density, which means more sturdy bones that are less likely to fracture or break.
5. Decreases Anxiety and Depression
With everything going on for moms every day, anxiety and/or depression can be something many of us struggle with on a daily basis. A great way to help combat some of those symptoms of anxiety and depression is through resistance training! It releases endorphins into your system and helps clear your mind, preparing you for whatever you need to accomplish!
As you can see, resistance training has many advantages that we can benefit from on the daily! Stay tuned this week for some great resistance workouts that you can do at home!
